Fix Intune Error 0x8024200D: The update handler would not install because it needs the content downloaded again (WU_E_UH_NEEDANOTHERDOWNLOAD).
Open the log below first. It is the quickest way to confirm which of the causes applies before you change anything.
WindowsUpdate.log
Folder: C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsUpdate\
Also check: CBS.log · WUAHandler.log (ConfigMgr)
Root causes
- The downloaded payload is incomplete or corrupt, often from a proxy, firewall or delivery optimization peer that returned bad data.
- Stale files in SoftwareDistribution\Download conflict with the current update metadata.
- A servicing stack problem stops the handler consuming the downloaded content.
Step-by-step remediation
- Merge the Windows Update traces into a readable file with Get-WindowsUpdateLog (it writes WindowsUpdate.log to the desktop), then search it for the error code.
- Stop wuauserv and bits, then delete the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download. Restart the services.
- Check that no firewall, proxy or TLS inspection modifies traffic to the Microsoft update endpoints, or to your WSUS or distribution point.
- Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow.
- On Windows 11, Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now is a supported repair.
- Retry the update and confirm the download completes in the log.
Keep patching failures out of the queue
Repeat update and client failures are cheaper to prevent than to chase. Compare the options that take app packaging and upkeep off your task list, from Enterprise App Management to PSADT.
